Who Are We
Deciphering the World of Science (DTWS) is a student-led global education and leadership initiative that teaches advanced molecular biology and genomics while training students to become instructors and establish independent chapters within their own communities, ultimately aiming to inspire the next generation of genetic engineers in society. DTWS operates on the principle that students should not merely consume scientific knowledge, but actively propagate it. By transforming learners into educators, DTWS creates a self-sustaining global network of student scientists capable of expanding access to advanced biological education.
Meet the Team!

Owen Geyman
Founder, Co-Executive Director
Owen Geyman is an 11th-grade student at Avenues New York with a passion for genomics, genetic engineering, and scientific accessibility. He conducts research at New York University and the Mount Sinai School of Medicine, and will soon serve as a Simons Research Fellow, a highly selective program for approximately 40 students nationwide; his work spans molecular, computational, and synthetic biology. Outside the lab, Owen enjoys playing tennis, exploring New York City with friends, and walking his dog, Dennis. As the founder and co-director of DTWS, he is committed to making genetic engineering more accessible to all students, breaking down access and comprehension barriers, and inspiring the next generation of leaders in genome engineering worldwide.

Allison Yi
Co-Founder, Co-Executive Director
Allison Yi is an 11th-grade student at Avenues New York, strongly passionate about public health and medicine. Seeking pre-professional opportunities to both expand and share her knowledge, Allison is a student at the Columbia Science Honors Program, a volunteer at the New York Presbyterian Columbia University Irving Medical Center, and an upcoming research intern at Rutgers University. Outside of STEM, you can find Allison playing soccer or at what seems like her 100th debate tournament of the year! As the co-founder and co-executive director of DWTS, Allison strives to make molecular biology more accessible for students all over the country, using hands-on activity and labs to inspire passionate students to pursue STEM opportunities.

Insa Akcoglu
Director of Program Development
Insa Akcoglu is an 11th grade student at Avenues New York passionate in genetics, math, and opportunities in STEM. She conducts research on the intersection of math and genetics. Insa also mentors 4th and 5th grade students in robotics, helping introduce them to problem-solving and engineering from a young age. Outside of STEM, you can find Insa running on the track, playing piano or violin, and trying new restaurants all around New York City. As the Director of Program Development, she aims to make genetic engineering more accessible and engaging through hands-on labs and interactive learning experiences, fostering curiosity and empowering the next generation of scientists.
